This season Materials & Applications has for the first time built installations in new locations and built indoor installations. These departures from our usual building process have opened up numerous opportunities for ne ways to work. We are excited to see what this process will yield. Our weekly workshops so far have included a talk on engineering systems by Matt Melnyk of Buro Happold and a talk on inflatable architecture by John Southern of UrbanOps and Dustin Feider of o2 Treehouse. We have had hands on construction experiments with Emily White, Lisa Little, Brian Janeczko, we even had a high fiving workshop with Aaron Ryan. In the future we have plans for many more interesting events including a rigging workshop at 826 and probably some more hydrology events here at M&A.
We have engaged in numerous workshops to experiment with steam bending bamboo, creating tensegrity forms with fabric and bamboo, creating a taxonomy of paper fringe with origami and many other processes which were part social enterprise and part building experiment. To date we have produced Extraterritorial Build, Fat Fringe , Bitter Melon, and Squid Capsule with numerous other projects in the works.

MatterApp grew from accumulating forces in many directions forming the perfect opportunity to build in the purest form we could foster. Without a specific design or plan we set out to allow the materials and the applications to find their own balance. After the success of the Fish Taco Farm and the String Theory we have begun to embark on a number of projects throughout Los Angeles this year. Each time selecting materials that we think are appropriate to the site or that are in some ways available to us. With those materials we invite experts in related fields and the public together to explore in parallel the development of concepts, models, prototypes, and projects. Periodically we weed through the ideas trading innovations and insights to socially compute the installtion at the crossroads of our ideas. Unlike design by committe which often arrives at the sort of watered down commercial style that our world is saturated with, we create projects which are daring, even crazy, but have enough of everyone's bravado in it that they work by spreading the challenging and the simple ideas. Like a tensegrity structure where some members are pulling while others push the designs provide enough opposing forces that they naturally arrive in harmony.
