The economic climate that produced the architecture (with a small "a" = real estate) frenzy of the past few years is nearing an end. It is not too soon - or too late! - to respond to the indicators coming into view more clearly every day.
Materials & Applications will continue to produce installations twice yearly and host open air discussions, workshops, and film screenings while a shift occurs in our focus. The fascination with the shiny and the new, the experimental and the novel is inherently human and is one of the traits that propels us in innovation. Acknowledging this, we will greet every proposal for future explorations/ projects with enthusiasm and curiosity but we especially encourage future participants to tend towards a greener solution and a more dynamic social structure. This means proposals should address the problems/ opportunities that challenge us right now: the rise of empire, the collapse of fossil fuels, and the growing divide between the haves and the have nots, between the right and the left, between the USA and the rest of the world.
